Teen Suicide Prevention For many teenagers in the year 2017, suicide is something that lurks on popular netflix or television shows, and is casually splashed across social media. For other teens, suicide is a harsh reality because they have been directly affected by the death of someone they know, or they experience suicidal thoughts themselves. What many people do not realize is that suicide is preventable, and mental illnesses that may cause teens to take their own lives are treatable. For teenagers, friendship and social lives are among their top ranked priorities in life. Because of this, friends are some of the most likely people to be able to recognize any suicide warning signs, and take action. What many people do not realize is that mental illnesses are treatable. According to â€Å"Active Mindsà ¢â‚¬  Health Professional Maggie Bertram, Mental illnesses that may lead to suicide include Bipolar Disorder, Alcohol/ substance Abuse Disorder, Generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, Obsessive compulsive disorder, major depression, panic disorder, schizophrenia, Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, posttraumatic stress disorder, and traumatic brain injury symptoms. Recognizing that a mental illness is present is the first step in receiving treatment. A person who deals with mental illness shows signs of the illness almost one hundred percent of the time. Mental illness in teenagers is extremely common, yet many do not know how to recognize these illnesses. If teenagers understand mental illness and the variations of it, they are more likely to help their peers receive treatment and prevent suicides. In order to better understand mental illness, one must first understand the possible causes and reasons why an illness may be present. Mental illnesses may be caused by more than one factor.
